Wooden handled contraption found in Victorian attic...what is it?

My curiosity is getting the best of me. This contraption is made of wood (not sure what type) and has a handle that pulls down over the wooden block that could possibly create a tight fit if something were inserted between the two pieces. It was found attached to the wall in the attic of an old Victorian house. I'm thinking it was used for holding a clothesline. Does anyone know what this is and what it was made for? It is marked Cavendish (Vermont) on the top of the large block so it appears to have been manufactured and not a home-made widget. The gnaw marks on it are from mice.

I love this! This is an artist's studio located next door to the Danby/Mt. Tabor Antique Center in Danby, Vermont. The artist is a prolific painter of chickens and has some amazing portraits on display outside of his studio. Here is a sampling:

The summer auction season is quickly approaching. This is a time when many old estates here in Vermont begin to empty out their attics, closets, cellars and barns to reveal long held treasures. A wonderful place to view and purchase many of these treasures is the Danby-Mt. Tabor Antique Center, a group shop located on Route 7 at the Vermont Wreath Company in Danby, Vermont.

Anna Q's Attic has a small booth at the Danby-Mt. Tabor Antique Center. It is well stocked with vintage jewelry, collectibles, glassware, books, and much more. We keep adding or changing items at regular intervals. Other shop members are continuously adding fresh items on a weekly or even daily basis. Be sure to stop by and visit.

Cute little wooden Polish dolls with big feet

Aren't these just the cutest little dolls you've ever seen? When my daughter was very young her Polish great-grandmother gave her 3 dolls. Two were cloth and one was a little wooden doll with big feet marked Made in Poland. Great-grandmother said she had the dolls for years but couldn't remember where they came from. Over the years my daughter started finding more of these little cuties at flea markets, tag sales, in shops and online. This started a collecting craze that accumulated over 100 dolls.

It was difficult to find information on these dolls but we learned they were made by a cottage industry and were a sort of souvenier doll sold to tourists. Some were stamped Poland while other had a sticker on their foot. They are jointed and can stand freely with their over sized feet. Their faces are hand painted and many are characters such as Pinocchio, Little Red Riding Hood and Santa Claus while others wear occupational clothing such as bell hop, farmer and nurse.

My daughter is grown now and the collecting has seized. Every day I walk past the glass door cabinet full of these dolls and I still enjoy looking at. They remind me of the fun I had helping my daughter collect them and they also remind us of great-grandmother who introduced us to these sweet playthings.

Just Not New shop is overflowing with antiques & great deals

This morning as I went about my rounds shipping eBay, checking my mailboxes and inspecting some landscaping projects I decided to stop in to see my friend John at his Just Not New shop in Cuttingsville, Vermont. Wow! John's little green shop is loaded with some great antiques and lots of other vintage items from around the Vermont countryside. John was in the process of unloading a new acquisition. It is a wonderful handmade antique desk with a marvelous primitive look.

I love to poke around in John's Just Not New shop. I never know what I'll find in there. If you're in the area be sure to stop in and say hello to John at 5304 Rte 103, just over the bridge from John C. Stewart. You can see a few of the items John has for sale on his website but if you're looking for more antique furniture you can also see lots of John's merchandise at The Vermont Wreath Company in Danby, Vermont. The Vermont Wreath Company/Danby Antique Center is a group shop filled with some great vintage finds from the New England area. Tell John that Cindy sent you!

That's only 25 years ago.

My hubby owned his dad's old 1966 Dodge Dart when I first met him. We drove that car from Houston, Texas to Vermont in July 1980. I still have nightmares about the steering and brakes on that old car. We actually brought our newborn daughter home from the hospital in that car in 1986.

 

In this photo my future husband is washing the old 1966 Dodge Dart getting it ready for the long road trip to Vermont. His dad bought the car brand new.

'The Old Girl' 1936 Ford Fire Truck

This is The Old Girl. She's the 1936 Ford fire truck owned by our local volunteer fire department. The Old Girl was purchased brand new by the department and over the years she has been lovingly maintained by our firefighters. The Old Girl needs lots of TLC and will celebrate her 75th birthday in 2011. The fire department has a blog with more photos and information about The Old Girl. What a beauty!

Seen better days!

This dilapidated bus was discovered in the backyard of an old homestead here in the hills of Vermont. It didn't look too promising but once inside it was discovered the former owner had used it to store a lifetime of antiques and treasures. In it were old crocks, furniture, toys, ephemera and a plethora of other vintage items packed from end to end and to the roof! A find like this is what keeps life fun and interesting.

Is eBay facing seller revolt?

Is eBay facing seller revolt? is the title of this article. Once again eBay is making changes to its fee scale and some are not happy. I've been selling on eBay since August 11, 1998 and I've seen many changes there. The only change I had the most difficulty adapting to was when eBay went strictly to using PayPal for payments and even that was an easy shift for me. I miss the checks and money orders but PayPal makes life at eBay less complicated.

Personally, I like eBay and am a loyal follower. With eBay you can never be unemployed. Over the years eBay has made life as a seller very simple and easy. I remember when we had to do everything from writing our own invoice to emailing the buyer or seller directly. I love all the new features of eBay and yes, it seems as though things change every other week but the benefits far outweigh the hassles. Change is good for many reasons. There is a wonderful spirit of community at eBay and I enjoy reading the many and varied opinions of both buyers and sellers. Let's face it, most of us are BOTH buyer and seller and eBay is looking out for our best interest.
