Vintage oil lamps

I love old photos. This one shows the interior of a home with a grandmother and grandchildren. What I love about this photo is the shelf with the clock and 2 oil (kerosene) lamps. I recently purchased an old kerosene lamp that is similar to the one on the left. It's called a composite lamp because it has various parts to the base. Many of the items in the old homes were practical and useful, unless you had some wealth and lived in a Victorian home. Then your furnishings were much more elaborate and not always utilitarian.

This is not the best photo and even had some damage. I try to save as many of these old photos as possible by scanning them and then tweaking them for better viewing. They are worth saving for their historical and subject value. I can just imagine how comfy and welcoming this granny's home was. It took some effort to get candid or portrait photographs back in those days. Many of these photos were well cherished because they were rarely produced and sometimes the only image of a particular relative. Many are lost to damage and many times family members don't know who these people were.
